Celebration stop

The Canada Games Roly McLenahan Torch stopped in Stettler for a celebration stop.

The torch came to Stettler Jan. 10 at the Stettler Recreation Centre. The Torch Relay kicked off in Ottawa after the torch was lit by the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill. It’s stopping in about 50 communities across the country.

“It’s going from coast to coast to coast and Stettler has been one of these stops,” said Battle River – Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson.

“This is awesome, the support from the community here is unbelievable,” said Stettler Mayor Sean Nolls.

“What an honour the Heart of Alberta was chosen to be one of the stops,” said Stettler County Reeve Larry Clarke.

Canada Games have been going for 52 years and this is the first time the torch is going across Canada and stopping in select communities.

The 2019 27th Canada Winter Games are set for Feb. 15 to March 3 in Red Deer. There will be more than 150 events in 19 sports, as well as art and cultural festival. About 3,600 athletes are expected to participate in the games and the games organizers expect about 100,000 spectators.

In 1985 the Canada Games Torch was renamed Roly McLenahan Torch after the late McLenahan, an original member of the Canada Games Council.
