Tournament brings in largest amount ever

The annual tournament to raise money for area cancer patients has reached a new milestone.

The annual tournament to raise money for area cancer patients has reached a new milestone.

Hosted at the Bashaw Golf and Country Club on Saturday, June 11, the 2016 edition of the Golf 4 A Cure charity tournament brought in the largest amount ever raised at just under $8,900, explained organization chairperson Marilyn Hoy.

“It was incredibly fantastic. We have never seen it that high,” she said.

“The kindness that all of the business, donations from people and from the golfers themselves was just incredible. The fact the economy has been down lately and they are all still being so generous is wonderful.”

Last year, the event raised more than $6,500, so the dramatic increase was more than welcomed, as all of the funds raised go to the Bashaw and District Health and Wellness Foundation to assist and support cancer patients from around the region with expenses and other items that may not be covered by provincial or private health coverage.

Hoy added that nearly half of the money raised - about $4,000 - came through the generosity of those bidding on the live and silent auction items, while about $2,000 more came from such things as raffles, on-course challenges and a 50/50 draw.

“As part of the auction, there was a homemade quilt that was won by a woman, who also won the 50/50 so she decided to donate those winnings back in order to further support the foundation. That’s how incredible everyone was,” Hoy stated.

Tournament is sold out well in advance every year and, even though it was held the same day as Bashaw’s Razzle Dazzle Day and the 2016 Bashaw School Homecoming event, it still turned out to be a tremendous success.

Even the weather, which had been threatening thunder and lightning all morning, cleared off and left the teams alone to finish their rounds under bright sun and clear skies in the afternoon.
