The Torches and Keystones hosted their seventh annual spaghetti supper at the Heartland Youth Centre (HYC) on Thursday, Feb. 11 raising $450 for their clubs.

"The funds raised go solely to the Torch and Keystone clubs for things that they want to do such as special events, field trips, camps and conferences through the Boys and Girls Clubs," said Winnie Bissett, executive director of HYC.

The Torches are supervised by Pat Wood, while Sarah Langlois is in charge of the Keystones.

"Having their own governing bodies and president, treasurer, secretary etc., the kids learn how to work as a board per se and to plan and execute their own activities," said Bissett. "This is part of the community involvement and leadership for the groups."

There were 80 people who attended the supper.

"The kids came right after school on Thursday and went to work on the supper, and were there at HYC from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.," said Bissett. "The event looked very nice and the kids were dressed up in their best to serve, but at 8:30 p.m. when they left you couldn't even tell an event had taken place."

According to Bissett, the event went really well, with all kids pitching in to help, while some cooked, others served, and most of them decorated and cleaned up afterwards.

"Their parents should know that these kids can all do dishes now," added Bissett. "The kids learn some really basic life skills at this event, such as proper food handling, how to be polite and serve the public and there were a few kids that spoke about what the event was for and what they do as Torch and Keystone members, teaching them how to speak in front of a group."

While the Torch Club is full with 12 members, aged 11-14, Keystones have nine members, from 14-18 year olds.
