Stettler resident Lesa Miller became the recipient of "Everyday Kindness" award on Thursday, Nov. 10 at the Edmonton Violence Prevention Centre's (EVPC) Everyday Heroes event.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness month, EVPC hosted an evening of entertainment and celebration to honour 11 recipients that go above and beyond to help others and improve the lives of people in their community, said Wendy Rhyason, EVPC executive director.

"I met Lesa Miller when I was the Executive Director of Stettler FCSS," Rhyason said. "She is a loving and warm person and I was inspired by her continual kindness and care of others."

Miller is a single mother with health issues and limited income but she does what she can to make life easier for the people in her life, according to Rhyason.

"From giving personal items, making an encouraging phone call, giving people rides, lending her vehicle, or babysitting to give a mom a break, Lesa truly epitomizes what it means to be an Everyday Hero," Rhyason said. "I was so impressed with the way she consistently helped other people and offered encouragement and kindness to everyone. Despite her own challenges, she looked for ways to make life easier for others."

When EVPC decided to have this event, the first person Rhyason thought of was Lesa. "She is very deserving of this award and the people of Stettler are fortunate to have someone so caring and loving in their town," Rhyason added.

Miller said she was "honoured and humbled" to receive the award.

"It was a great evening but the fact that I was one of the many people who were present there to receive an award was humbling," Miller said.
