The Halkirk Community Hall was filled to the seams as more than 200 people came out to support the Halkirk Elks' Alaskan Seafood & Comedy Night on Saturday, Feb. 6.

The evening, now in its fifth year, helps raise money for the Elks' coffers. The money, in turn, goes back into the community, primarily in causes that benefit children both in Halkirk and in neighbouring Castor, where many of the community kids go to school.

Dinner consisted of clam chowder, salads, and several varieties of fish. The sold-out event had the community hall at capacity with 220 or so guests. Students from Gus Wetter served dinner and cleaned up throughout the night, and in return will receive some of the profits to help cover the cost of their prom later this year.

Charles Muncy, a trustee with the Halkirk Elks and one of the event organizers, praised the students for their hard work. The students worked as a team inside the kitchen, methodically filling bowls of soup and loading them onto trays to carry out to the hungry guests.

The prom isn't the only recipient of the night's take, though.

"We donate to prom and other projects — the ski hill, the Halkirk and Castor schools, scouts, 4-H, and more," Muncy said.

In past years, the event has brought in between $5,000 and $6,000, and Muncy said he has no reason to believe this year will be any different. The Seafood and Comedy night is one of three big events hosted by the Elks throughout the year, the other being the Bullarama in August and the Oyster Fry and White Elephant Auction.

This year's comedy performance was a hypnotist, who spent three hours on stage and "was wildly entertaining," Muncy said.
