The Halkirk curling rink was in heavy use last week as the men's and women's curling bonspiel had the two sheets at max capacity up until the final games on Sunday, March 13.

With 19 rinks competing — 13 teams in the men's bonspiel and six in the women's bonspiel — there was no room for any more teams, Halkirk Curling Club president J.D. Johnson said. There was one team waiting in the wings, hoping for a berth to free up, to no luck.

The men's A champion was Erskine's Richie Chapman rink, who after a week of consistently winning play came up against the Castor/Halkirk rink of Lyle Weber.

The Lee Fowler rink beat out the Dan Fowler rink to take the B Championship, and Tony Nibourg's rink beat out the Ray Stirling rink for the C championship.

In the women's bonspiel, Byemoor's Chrissy Jack rink took the A Championship after winning against Stettler's Cathy Rairdan rink. The B Championship was claimed by the Sandra Johnson rink after a win over the Tina Ensign rink, and the C Championship went to the Lorna Shilling rink, who beat out the Clara Nibourg rink for the title.

The event took place starting the Monday before, with the two-sheet rink busy as teams jockeyed for final bragging rights. A catered lasagna dinner with door prizes, raffles and silent auction kept the curlers off the ice during the evening on Saturday, March 13, before the final draws played the next day.
