Dance jam kicks off for another season

The Erskine hall was full of swirling skirts and expert steps as the monthly dance jam brought people from near and far.

Held every second Sunday of the month, the dance jam takes place in Erskine from 1-4 p.m. and features live music, dancing, a potluck snack and the camaraderie of fellow dancers.

According to one of the organizers, Gordon McLellan, the first event of the fall season brought in about 40 people, which wasn't that bad for harvest season, he noted.

"One time, we had almost 60 people come out," he said.

The events feature live music, but McLellan doesn't bring in a band. It's a jam session — any musician, whether instrumental or vocal — can take a turn on stage performing for the dancers.

"All the local — and sometimes local is pretty far away — talent can come and play," McLellan said.

After a stop at 2:30 p.m. for a snack and for some visiting, the dancing and music continues until things wind down at 4 p.m.

Everyone is welcome, McLellan said, regardless of age — and the next dance jam in Erskine is on Sunday, Oct. 9.
