Wm. E Hay athletes shine in Red Deer

Wm. E. Hay athletes produced superb performance at the central Alberta zone track meet in Red Deer on Wednesday, May 26, with the town’s star swimmer Alana Skocdopole undersigning two track records and several athletes qualifying for the provincial competition in Medicine Hat this weekend, June 4-5.

Skocdopole claimed gold medals in two intermediate-distance junior class races, 1500 m and 3000 m, setting new records in both events. She also won a bronze medal in high jump. It was reported that Skocdopole’s times in the two races were good enough to win her both intermediate and senior titles as well.

Buddy Brown also won gold medals in the 1500 m and 3000 m races in intermediate boys category as did Tyler Bissett in the senior boys category in the same distances while Kylie Younghans claimed her gold in the intermediate girls’ triple jump.

Dylan McKay was the winner of the 200 m sprint in the senior category while Ricky Armstrong won the 200 m race in the junior category.

Alongside the gold medalists, Jacob Schwarzenberger advances to the provincials with his second place in the 400 m sprint.

Under the guidance of their coaches Warren Aspenes, Sara Steinbach and Rachelle Campeau, other athletes also placed well in their categories, including Taylor Starling claiming a bronze in senior boys 100 m sprint, and Nicola Starling: winning fourth place in both intermediate girls 100 m and 200 m sprint.
