The Stettler peewee girls’ hockey team is off to the female peewee B provincials for the first time in team history.

The girls have been busy with provincial play downs for the last three weeks, winning three series to capture the title of Zone 7 Champions.

The first series saw the Whippits matched up against Sherwood Park. The first game in Sherwood Park ended in a 2 – 2 draw and saw the series move back to Stettler for a second game. Heading into the last minute of game two, the score was again 2 – 2. The Stettler Whippits poured it on and with 39 seconds left, Stettler scored the winning goal to move onto round two.

The seconds series saw Stettler take on Provost. Game one ended in a 2 – 1 score, setting up an exciting game two. In the second game, the score was 2 – 1 heading into the last minute of play. Provost pulled their goalie to push for the tying goal. Stettler would have none of that and scored an empty netter to win the game 3 – 1 and officially win their way to the provincials.

The third series saw Stettler take on the host Viking team for zone winner bragging rights. The first game in Viking was again a tied affair, ending 2 – 2. Second game was played at home in Stettler where a large, loud crowd was on hand to cheer the local girls on. The game was again a very close game ending in a 2 – 1 score in a very exciting finish for the girls.

Coach Troy Slemp would like to congratulate all the girls on the team for their outstanding hard work and team play throughout the provincial playoffs.

The team is headed to provincials at the end of March.
