Volleyball team initiates fund raising effort

Volleyball camaraderie at the Wm. E Hay has initiated a fundraiser dinner to help the relief efforts for Japan when students thought they should show their support for one team member, Japanese exchange student Satomi Kondo.

Teachers and students have mobilized for a fundraiser today, Wednesday, April 20 that is to take place at the school cafeteria.

It will be a spaghetti dinner combined with a silent auction.

“Our administrative assistant Trish Schwarzenberger had the idea to make sure that we were doing something within our school for Satomi Kondo, our Japanese exchange student,” explained Sarah Steinbach, science and biology instructor and senior volleyball coach.

“Because Satomi plays volleyball with my team, my girls know Satomi very well. So we decided we could get some volleyball players to help us with that.”

The students’ union will also volunteer at the fundraiser.

“We thought it would be a good way to bring the community together,” said Steinbach.

“We wanted to bring people outside into our school for a really good cause.“

People can still donate things for the silent auction.

“We would appreciate any donation from within the community,” said Steinbach.

“We already have things ranging from a signed jersey from Phoenix’s Shane Doan, to hair products packages and lots of other stuff.”

The event will start at 5:30 p.m. and end at 7 p.m.

People can buy tickets at the high school office and within the community.

All funds raised will be donated to the Red Cross.
