It was a well-fought battle as Stettler played Diablos for third place in the Battle River League Cup competition on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 28 in Wetaskiwin, defeating the home side 2-1.

Devon Woelk and Matt Liske were the scorers for Stettler side.

Playing their final game of the season, Stettler was short of a player as only ten players were able to make it to the game.

Even though Wetaskiwin took an early lead with a penalty kick, described as “questionable” by the Stettler side, the visitors fought back to rekindle their chances.

“After going down early in the first half on a questionable penalty call, we battled back and worked hard as a team to finally tie the game towards the end of that half,” said captain Andrew Vanderburg.

Ricky Armstrong and Frank Van Ommeren passed their way through the Diablos team and finally set up Devon Woelk who buried the equalizer.

Goalie Wyatt Haustein made a number of saves to keep the game tied.

“Our goalie had to make a few spectacular saves to keep us in the game and our perseverance paid off in the second half,” said Vanderburg.

Stettler player Matt Liske earned and finished a penalty shot to put Stettler in the lead 2-1.

With Stettler keeping up the pressure on their opponents, Diablos was unable to rework their way into the game leading to a great season-ending game for Stettler.
