The Stettler Wildcats continued their dominant season defeating the Hunting Hills Lightning 31-11 Friday night at Setters Place.

With the win, the Wildcats continue their undefeated season sitting at 3-0 after the first few weeks in the Central Alberta Football League.

Stettler head coach Norbert Baharally said the outcome was great and explained Hunting Hills gave them a great contest.

“Hunting Hills they came to play tonight and give them a lot of credit they were the first team this year to have us down… We’ve been challenged and tested today and luckily our guys fought back and got through some adversity to come out with the win,” he said.

After a slow first half that saw the Wildcats leading 7-3, Hunting Hills took the lead early in the third quarter 10-7. However, shortly after that, the Wildcats regained the lead 14-10 after a massive through downfield that left a Stettler receiver wide open.

Stettler continued to move the ball offensively marching down the field the next series and running a touchdown in on a goal line play.

In the fourth quarter, Stettler kicked in a field goal to take a 24-11 lead before their defence took an interception to the house to add to their lead 31-11.

Baharally said they take pride in having a good defence and his team works hard on that side of the ball.

“We know good defence can win football games for you and we had a pick-six which you know opened up the lead a little bit too towards the end of the game and was a great cushion,” he said.

“It’s a total team effort. We go with the motto of family first and they look out for each other and they’re all committed and in for the long haul.”

Head coach of the lightning Kyle Sedgewick said it was a tough matchup since they haven’t played the Wildcats in nine years and although Stettler played a great game, he felt his team missed out on a lot of opportunities.

“They took some penalties we didn’t take advantage of… Last week our guys came out and they got up to a lead it’s a lot easier to play now when you have the lead but these are the games that our guys have to learn from,” he said. “This is what we’re trying to rebuild in teaching our guys how to win again. The resiliency here now is it’s 7-3 at the half and come out back and forth and then they made a couple of big plays on us. Then it’s how are you going to bounce back? It’s still a close game.”

“I think if we do things well we could play this team again later in the playoffs at some point.”
