With the baseball season slowly coming to a close, the Stettler Savages have been going strong, winning all their games but one in the Innisfail weekend tournament, losing only to Elnora in the final game for gold on Sunday, June 19.

The Savages played an outstanding tournament, beating Sylvan Lake 16-6, Innisfail 9-4 and Delburne 6-4 on Saturday, June 18, Bob Couch, the assistant coach said .

On Sunday they took on Drumheller winning the game 16-7.

In the gold medal game they lost to Elnora 4-1.

“The Elnora game was the most entertaining game of the year, and a pleasure to watch and coach as their team is well coached and played hard, not conceding runs at all,” said Couch. “Truly when you can get a 4-1 final, it is a testament to how well both teams pitched and played, but what made it all the more impressive was the fact that both teams stuck with their aces.”

Madison McCrindle kept the game close but the Savages just couldn’t get the hits they needed, and anytime they did make contact, an Elnora player was there to scoop it up and make the outs, added Couch.

“The coaches could not be more proud of how well the girls represented themselves both on the field and off, it was a great weekend of ball,” said Couch.

The U14 Savages move off to play downs this weekend with the goal of making it to provincials in Edmonton.

“This was the first year for the team in the GPLS and to finish third against such great competition was a great success for the team,” added Stotz. “Excellent defence and outstanding pitching were keys to Stetter’s victories in Irma.”

According to Stotz, the girls played some “tight” games, but all the girls worked hard in practices and it showed as they continued to make routine and spectacular defensive plays all weekend.

“I would like to thank all the girls and parents for their hard work, dedication and support through there inaugural season in the championship,” said Stotz.
