In their home games against Donalda, the Stettler Junior A girls and boys scored convincing wins as they outplayed their opponents on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Stettler boys overpowered Donalda by a score of 64-8.

"The boys distributed the ball around very well," said coach Kevin Burkhard. "They played good man-to-man defence as well."

The boys play Erskine next in an away game on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

"Our next game should be a challenge since last time we met Erskine took it to us in the first quarter," added Burkhard.

The Junior A girls also battered Donalda and took an early lead, finishing with a win.

"Some games are close and coaches gauge their teams this way but for us, having a stronger team this year, we look at our tournament play as the games that matter," said coach Charisse McDonald. "We beat Donalda handily, but we are an older team by comparison."

Stettler's top scorers were Tori Brower and Baileigh Sorenson.

"For most games, we'd like all the players on the scoresheet and that is our goal," said McDonald. "We have come a long way defensively this year and the offence is a work in progress, but one of the great things about coaching this age group is that we see improvements every week and in every game."

Stettler Junior B teams lose against Big Valley

Stettler Junior B boys lost against Big Valley in an away game 50-35 on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

"Although the boys didn't win the game, it was very close and they really pulled together as a team," said coach Brittaney Code. "The team has improved over the last week on running their play and their help defence."

The Junior B girls had no luck either losing to Big Valley 44-29.

"We had a great game, and the girls are improving nicely, although we lost this game," said Amy Kobi. "We are working on getting back quickly on defence.

Both teams face Big Valley again in their next game in Big Valley.

Stettler JV girls win, boys lose to Notre Dame

Stettler JV boys lost to Notre Dame from Red Deer 70-43 in their home game on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

"We struggled throughout the game scoring, and although we played strong defence in the first half, we ran into foul trouble early in the third quarter," said coach Warren Aspenes. "With only eight players to begin with, we ended up just running out of energy."

Terrance Corbett hit a few three-point shots to give Stettler some headway but it was not enough.

"We need to do a much better job of reducing our turnovers and making sure we get good shot attempts especially early in the game," said Aspenes. "We have gotten into a bad habit of rushing passes and shots that just really are not wise."

Stettler will host West Central from Rocky Mountain House on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Stettler JV girls continued their winning streak as they beat Notre Dame.

They also won the tournament this past weekend, Friday and Saturday in Camrose, beating Spruce Grove 35 to 29 and Brooks by a huge margin, and defeating Camrose in the finals by 12.

"This week we are working on our zone defence and running our in bound plays to get more scoring opportunities," said coach Kim Poapst.

With all the players scoring this past weekend, Poapst said, "We are shooting more threes as a team and working on driving more to the hoop."

According to Poapst, the girls are working on discipline to run the offence especially when playing a close game.

The JV girls have recorded 15 wins and two losses so far in the season.
