Camp Coordinator Jamie Schwarzenberger says the 27th Camp Teckla Basketball Camp has been "another great year."
The program started in 1997 and was organized by friends and family of local student Teckla Anderson who was killed in a car accident that year.
Friends of Anderson were both organizers and early staff members, and many of them carried on their involvement in the program regardless of their changing lives over the years.
Anderson had already had an impressive basketball history, including youth Summer Games and high school provincials.
Schwarzenberger explains that their coaching staff is also comprised of local talent who also came up in the camp. This includes the kids of the camp’s head coach, Leighann Doan-Reimer, and Kim Poapst.
Despite being a few years older than Anderson, Doan-Reimer knew her from them growing up in the Halkirk area, while Poapst was one of Anderson’s coaches and one of the organizers and an early camp coach.
This year, the program has eight coaches helping work with 165 students.
In addition to their duties during their day, many of them volunteer extra hours outside of the camp schedule.
Students are invited to come back to the school gymnasium between 7 and 8:30 p.m. for some open play basketball giving them a chance to put the things they have learned during the day to use.
Schwarzenberger says the coaches have generously volunteered their time to oversee these games and help keep score.
