The Stettler Atom girls won the league title last weekend by beating Rocky Lightning in Rocky Mountain House 5-3 in the second game, having won the first game against them 4-2.

What makes their feat remarkable is that they played in a boys' league, because there aren't any girls' teams in the area.

In the final round of play, Emma McMullen scored four goals, Hanna Cornelssen had one goal and one assist, Mackenna Hogg had one goal and one assist, while single goal scorers were Jayden Olafson, Mya Prehn and Grace McMullen.

Faith Baskey and Alyssa Shaw had one assist each.

Kristin Forseth was the goaltender throughout.

"The girls played positions very well and defensively they were outstanding," said coach Clint Greiner. "Our forwards stuck to the system and never quit on any play, working every team they played in playoffs, with our goaltender 'standing on her head' throughout the playoffs."

Greiner said that he was very proud of his team.

"These young ladies were a very hard working, dedicated, respectful bunch of girls and as a team they improved way past my expectations, seeing as how a lot of them were first year players," added Greiner. "I believe we had so much success on ice due to the fact that we had even more success off ice, really coming together as a team early on in the year."
