Stettler’s senior girl and boys Wildcats hosted their annual basketball tournament last weekend with the Stettler ladies earning the championship medals with their hard work.

Senior girl Wildcats won their first game 62-45 against Beaverlodge Royals with a strong second half drive, moving to the next game with Hinton Rockies.

“With excellent 3-point shooting and great driving, the Hinton team showed to be a great competition for the girls,” said Wildcats coach Rachelle Campeau.

“Wildcat point guard Katrenia Heier stepped up, scoring 26 points in the game,” she said.

Having overpowered Hinton 47-41, senior girl Wildcats took on Edmonton’s W.P Wagner, beating them 70-52 and winning the championship.

“Katerina Heier was the top scorer for all games with posts Ashlyn Mckinnon and Mykala Sorensen being a close second in putting their mark on the scoreboard, “ said Campeau.

As for boys, they ended the tournament at eight place with no wins.

“All teams were very evenly matched and it made for an exciting weekend of basketball,” said boy Wildcats’ coach Joe Thibeau.

“Stettler senior boys had fun despite finishing in 8th place. They worked hard throughout the tournament and had some very close games,” he said.

JV Wildcat girls traveled to Sylvan Lake on Wednesday Feb. 23 and they managed to pull off a 37-34 victory from a tight game.

JV boys also took on their counterparts in Sylvan Lake.

“The boys had an impressive comeback in the second half closing a 16- point gap but just ending up short 56-52 to the Sylvan Lake boys,” said coach Warren Aspenes.

“Despite not having our two post players in the line-up, we were able to adjust in the second half and improve our defense holding Sylvan Lake to 20 points,” he added.

Ricky Armstrong had an impressive game leading all players in rebounding and scoring, according to Aspenes.

Grade 9 boys, for their part, traveled to Lacombe for a tournament on Feb. 25. Coached by Neil Pinder, the boys won their first game 64-33 against Leduc on Friday, but lost 81-57 to Lacombe in the second game of the day.

On Saturday, with three players missing from the roster, the boys lost to St. Francis 42-38.
