Competing in two different Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) events brought a new set of challenges for Stettler area cowboy Riley Warren.

He competed in the team roping and tie-down roping events at the CFR in Edmonton last week from Nov. 5 to 9. This was his second appearance at the finals and Warren says he felt more comfortable this time around.

“I was actually a lot less nervous coming in the second time,” he said.

In August, Warren knew he had won enough money to earn himself a spot at Rexall Place in tie-down roping.

This gave the cowboy, who likes to compete in both events throughout the year, a chance to relax and concentrate on increasing his money.

“I had probably about $1,500 more than I needed,” said Warren.

Securing a spot in the finals for team roping happened on the last day of his last rodeo of the season. Warren had to win first place at the Grassroots Finals in Calgary from Oct. 3 to 4.

“I was pretty excited about that because it was kind of a long shot to get it,” said Warren.

“There’s a lot of factors you need lined up to get there,” he added.

He and header Keith Murdoch suffered two no-times at the CFR but managed to earn $4,844 each during the week. Warren’s overall earnings for the season were $14,823 in team roping.

For tie-down roping Warren earned $8,781 during the CFR and total overall earnings of $23,903 for the season.

Competing at the CFR is an experience he hopes to continue having in future years. Warren says he intends to continue competing in both events as the CFR is a rodeo he enjoys participating.

“It’s just a really good atmosphere,” he said.
