Nine football players from Stettler and area make it to the Alberta Summer Games 2016

With the summer games in Leduc from July 14-17, nine football players from Stettler and area made it to the final roster of Zone 4.

As the province gears up for the summer games in Leduc from July 14-17, nine football players from Stettler and surrounding areas made it to the final roster of Zone 4 along with other players from Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Lacombe, Penhold and Ponoka.

“Stettler can be proud of the boys representing the Zone 4 football team in the upcoming 2016 summer games,” said Stettler coach Mark Neitz. “Eighty plus players from central Alberta converged on Lacombe to vie for 36 roster spots, and when final cuts were made, nine young men from Stettler and area were selected.”

Neitz added that there was strong competition in all areas, and the Stettler contingent held their own and raised the bar in many cases.

“We look forward to watching these young men and others compete for what we hope to be Zone 4’s first summer games title,” said Neitz. “The camp starts July 4 with two-a-day practices for eight days, and then up to Leduc for the opening of the games on July 14.”

Zone 4 will open the tournament on July 15 at 9.30 a.m. with two more games to follow on Saturday and Sunday and finals on late Sunday afternoon if the team makes it.

Among the players are Lincoln Carey, Myles Ecklund, Dan Lesage, Justin Matchett, Steele Nichols, Declan McCord, Kelly Page, Noah Mckay, and Carson Neitz.

“We’d like to congratulate them on their accomplishments and wish them luck,” said Neitz.
