Mixed results for local teams in hockey provincials, atom Elks go into final series

Stettler bantam AA Storm returned from provincials in Lethbridge with two losses and a win last weekend, when they could have had more wins.

In the first game, bantam AA Storm lost to Okotoks 6-2 on Friday, March 18, with both points for the team coming from Jacob Hamel.

In the second game, Stettler got a 2-1 lead over Drayton Valley on goals from Jesse Ventnor and Stephen Zuk, and despite strong goaltending by Devon Woelk and a good team effort they gave up two third period goals losing with a score of 4-2.

Third game was a 7-6 win over Peace River with Jordan McCallum making 57 saves and Stettler offense firing 40 shots at the Peace River goal in an end-to-end game. Jacob Hamel, Chase Cooke, and Taylor Chase had two goals each while Stefan DuToit had three assists.

Bantam AA Storm were scheduled to play Hobbema as the Independent went to press on Tuesday for the consolation banner of tier one of North Central Alberta Minor Hockey Association League.

As for atom AA Elks, they were in Wainwright for their provincials, where they tied 4-4 with Indus in their first game.

Elks later overpowered Peace River 5-2, but lost to High River 6-3 in their third game.

In the semi-finals, atom AA Elks lost to Lacombe Rockets 4-2, a tier one team.

In the league playoffs, Elks thrashed Sundre on Wednesday March 16h by a score of 10 – 2 to advance to the finals. They are now set to meet Lacombe Atom B Rockets in the final series. The two-game total goal series will be played on March 23 in Lacombe at 7:15 p.m. and then on Saturday March 26 in Stettler at 11:30 a.m.
