Minor hockey winding up, Elks on top

As regular season nears its completion in minor hockey, bantam AA Scotiabank Storm split their final two league games over the weekend, defeating Sylvan Lake 4- 2 on Saturday, Feb 26, and losing 5-3 the next day to league leaders Olds in an away game.

Stefan du Toit scored twice against Sylvan Lake with Andrew Shirley, and Stephan Zuk adding one each to the tally. Jordan McCallum made 30 saves for the win. Goals against Olds came from Jacob Hamel (2) and Stephan Zuk.

“The team is struggling with injuries and hopes to be healthy for league playoffs and provincials in Lethbridge March 17-20,” said coach Mike Chase.

Still in bantam category, Stettler’s Wells Furniture female teams finished the regular season in first place after two consecutive wins over the weekend. On Saturday, Feb. 26, the girls played Innisfail and won 2-1 with the points scored by Jayden Hogg and Kelsie Litke.

The next day, the girls defeated Sylvan Lake 3-1 to secure their spot on the top. Scorers were Harlee Avramenko and Jayden Hogg (2).

At the midget level, the CSI Storm rebounded from their earlier defeat against Red Deer Bodies and beat them 3-1 on Friday, Feb. 25 in an away game.

“We played a better disciplined game and it paid dividends,” said coach Steven Leacock.

Scorers were Cole Nichols and Brogan Cassidy with superb goaltending from Quade Anderson contributing to victory.

Sunday, Feb. 27 CSI Storm concluded the season with a strong winning performance against Winfield with a score of 6-2.

“It was a great way to finish the regular season,” said Leacock. Scorers were Tanner Duncan, Tyler Greiner, Quinten Leacock and Brock Prescott.

CSI Storm have yet to find out which team they will be facing in provincials.

Atom AA Elks, for their part, beat Wainwright twice last week in provincial playdowns, first at home 10-4 and then 8-5 on the road.  Goals in the first game were scored by Adam Shirley (4), Erik Rost (4), Kameron Bainbridge and Daylan Kuefler. In the second game, scorers were Erik Rost(2); James Switenky; Daylan Kuefler (3); Carter Van Esch and Sam Hamelin.

Atom AA Elks will be representing Zone 7 in the atom A provincial tournament March 18-20.

Sunday. Feb 27, Elks played their last league at home winning 11-3 against Olds, and retained their undefeated status with 18 wins and no losses.

Goals were scored by Adam Shirley(3); Rhett Shingoose; Daylan Kuefler (3); Erik Rost(2); Jordan Burkard and Kameron Bainbridge.
