A team built from scratch - Head coach Jeff Anheliger says members of his team achieved the transformation from being minor hockey players to playing hockey like juniors in an admirable way

Midget AA Legion Blues completed their minor hockey season by placing third in their league, a season team management says “has been one to be proud of as players, coaches and parents.”

Made up of a skilled collection of players from Stettler and Castor representing Stettler in the highly competitive league, the team recovered slowly but surely from early losses as the season progressed.

“We quickly learned that it would take much more than individual talent to compete at this level and before Christmas we had become tied for last place,” remembers head coach Jeff Anheliger.

The midgets attended a team building tournament in Edmonton and even though they lost in the A final, Anheliger says they had accomplished the first steps in adjusting their strategies, systems, and level of play to compete in the league.

“We came out hard after Christmas with a renewed dedication and winning attitude which showed results as we climbed back up the standings, and by the time playoffs came, we were playing our best hockey, winning series after series against teams that beat us all year,” said Anheliger.

He said all the boys on this team should be congratulated for their ability to adjust their level of play from a minor hockey style game to a junior style level.

Anheliger also paid tribute to his coaching staff, trainers and managers for making the 2009/2010 season a memorable year.
