Stettler Lightning hopes to end the regular season gamesin the Heritage Junior B Hockey League with a winning streak this week as they host Rimbey and Ponoka in back-to-back games beginning Tuesday.

After the heavy 4-0 defeat suffered at the hands of the visiting Red Deer Vipers on Tuesday, Jan. 2, the Lightning easily rebounded against the weaker Rimbey side in a road game last Friday, Feb. 5, winning 8-2.

“We played quite well there,” said coach Doug Smith.

“Until the middle, it was a close game and then we got our wind and started to play creatively with the puck.”

The Lightning scored six of their eight goals in the second half of the second period and the third period.

Clayton Herzog scored twice with Mitch Finkbiner, Jeff Kohut, Gavin Brandl, Myles Rindal, Todd Potempa and Lanny Duncan adding one each to the scoreboard.

“We have three games in a row, all at home, first Ponoka today (Tuesday, Feb 9), then Rimbey on Friday and Ponoka again on Saturday and we want to get started on winning streak,” said coach Smith.

The Lightning have now secured their place in the playoffs and they will be facing Red Deer Vipers in a best-of-five series, beginning on Tuesday, Feb.16.

“The game in Rimbey last week solidified our position for playoffs,” Smith said.

The first playoff game against the Vipers will start at 8.30 at Rec Centre in Stettler.
