The Stettler Junior B Lightning hockey team put up a good fight against the Mountain View Colts in Big Valley Saturday, Jan. 12, but again walked away with one point, being defeated in overtime 2-3.

“The kids were a little disappointed, including coaches and management,” said Head Coach Rory Rost.

“We really would have liked to win in OT or in a shootout to get those two points, because they are a team we’re chasing.”

With only ten more games left in regular season play, the Lightning will need a few more wins if they want to take third place in the standings away from the Colts.

The Lightning weren’t playing with a full squad, with three lines and about four in defence, but iced a strong team regardless, says Rost.

From the puck drop, the Lightning were quick on the ice, scoring the first goal at 3:15 by No. 6 Keiran Rost, from No. 9 Rylee Jacobson and No. 14 Ethan Rost.

The Colts took back the lead before the end of the period, however, scoring with 30 seconds left on the clock.

Mountain View shutout the Lightning in the second period, and gained a 2-1 lead on a power play at 7:44.

The Lightning out-shot the Colts 14-10 in the second period, but just weren’t getting past the Colts’ goalie, says Rost.

The Lightning fought back in the third period and tied up the game at 3:49, on a power-play goal by defensive player No. 24 Reagan Holmes, assisted by No. 15 Jonathan Fournier and No. 3 Tyler Wagner.

The overtime period went for four minutes before the Colts were able to score, taking the game 2-3.

The Lightning had six or seven good break-aways during the game, but weren’t able to capitalize on them, says Rost.

No. 31 Indiana Kelly had 37 saves in 64 minutes in net.

As things are shaping up now, Stettler will likely play Ponoka or Blackfalds in the first round of playoffs, come mid-February, according to Rost.

The Lightning have four games in the next week.

“That’s a lot of hockey, for sure.”

The puck drops at home against the Ponoka Stampeders at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 15. They then play Ponoka again on the road, Jan. 16.

Ponoka tends to play well at home, so it could be anybody’s game, says Rost.
