Despite a slow start, the U14 boys' soccer team pulled it together on Wednesday, June 24 to turn the tables on Camrose 1, winning 3-1 to take the league championship.

After a nearly undefeated season – having lost only one game to Camrose 1 early on – the team's 3-1 win guaranteed them the gold medal for the 2015 soccer season.

“Their attitudes were great,” coach Kelly Cheater said of the team. “They performed with a huge amount of discipline and gave 110 per cent every game.”

It wasn't until the second half of the game that the team seemed to find their feet.

“Camrose was just hungrier for (the win),” Cheater said. “(Stettler) started off the first half on their heels.”

The team, which had a bye into the provincials due to its first-place standing in the league, won its games in provincial qualifying despite that and will now host the tournament on July 10-12. Camrose United was defeated in qualifiers by Stettler, but because of Stettler's bye will also have the chance to compete.

U12 boys repeat winning pattern

The next day, Stettler U12 boys faced the only team that had given them a challenge during the season, according to coach Steve Wildeboer.

The team, which played undefeated all season, had several near misses with Bentley, the team that took the silver in the Thursday match, which Stettler won 2-1.

“The only team to give us a challenge was Bentley,” Wildeboer said. “Every time we've played them, we've only won by one point.”

Bentley took the Stettler Sports Park field intending to win, “totally outplaying” Stettler, Wildeboer said.

“Our strong defense saved us,” he noted.

Like the U14 boys, the U12 boys are heading to provincials on July 10-12, this time in Vermillion, where their coach thinks they have a good chance of finishing well.

“They're up to the challenge,” he said.
