JV teams get mixed results, Grade 9 teams keep improving

Basketball action continued in Stettler last week with JV Wildcat boys and girls hosting Wetaskiwin Sabres on Wednesday, Feb 2, with the day ending with a win and a loss for the local teams.

In the first game, JV girls overpowered the visiting Sabres 32-26 in only the last quarter in competitive and exciting play.

In the first three quarters of the game, there were many lead changes with each team scoring through lay-ups and field goals.

It was only towards the end of the game that the Stettler side managed to dominate visitors to secure the only win of the night.

As for the boys game, it could have turned out to be the second win of the night had it not been for the failure to score in the second half.

“After giving up a 10 point lead we stayed with them throughout the game, until the end,” said coach Warren Aspenes.

“We did a very good job of creating good scoring chances, but our failure to finish was the difference in the game.”

JV boys lost to Sabres with a score of 69-52.

The Wm. E. Hay Grade 9 boys basketball team played Big Valley School on the same night and won with resounding score of 72-33. The leading scorers for the team were Brock Prescott with 14 points, Stephen Zuk with 12 points and Nicholas Baharally and Justin Fleischhacker with 11 points each.

Welcoming Amy Sun back from her trip to Korea, Grade 8-9 girls’ team also beat Big Valley girls with a score of 58-16.
