JV basketball teams end season in Red Deer

Girls inspire hope for next season

Stettler’s junior varsity boys and girls basketball teams ended their season this weekend as Red Deer’s Notre Dame High School and Hunting Hills High School hosted zone playoffs.

The JV girls from William E. Hay Composite High School played Lacombe first on Friday, Feb. 27, losing narrowly in a back-and-forth game.

On Saturday morning, they defeated Camrose in a more decisive game that saw Kayla Myshaniuk score a total of 24 points.

That win took the girls to the B-side consolation final, where they lost 67-37 to Red Deer’s Lindsey Thurber Comprehensive High School.

Coach Kim Poapst said it was a weekend with lots of good competition. The team finished the season with 13 wins and 12 losses.

“The kids got better and better,” she said of the season overall, adding that she also appreciated the support of their parents over the months.

Poapst said she hopes to continue a JV girls basketball program in the spring, although details have yet to be determined.

The JV boys did not get to compete in playoffs this year, as they did not have enough available players due to injuries.

Coach Michael Kocher noted that Mitchell Gudgeon was the latest casualty, breaking his wrist after making a two-handed dunk. The team was forced to concede its playoffs spot to Ponoka.
