Erskine edges host Coronation to dig gold medal

The CARA curling championships for Clearview junior high students were staged last Thursday in Coronation.

The CARA curling championships for Clearview junior high students were staged last Thursday in Coronation. Erskine’s Drew Bignell defeated Taylor Eno of host Coronation 4-3 in the final.

The gold-medal game was described as intense. The score was 3-2 for Coronation with one end left and Coronation with last-rock advantage. Erskine prevailed with the school’s first CARA curling crown since 2007.

Sixteen teams participated in this daylong event. The teams, listed by skip, from schools in the district were:

— Rachel Morbeck, Erskine

— Drew Bignell, Erskine

— Delaina Devnich, Erskine

— Luke Skocdopole, Big Valley

— Jessie Jack, Byemoor

— Shianne Klatt, Donalda

— Gerri-Ann Georget, Christ-King

— Grayson Loshny, SMS

— Avery Marko, SMS

— Tyler Craigie, Brownfield

— Quinton Golby, Brownfield

— Carlie Dunkle, Gus Wetter

— Koryn Duncan, Coronation

— Kyla Duncan, Coronation

— Taylor Eno, Coronation

The annual event is usually hosted in the town of the winners of the bonspiel from the previous year. It has been held in Coronation in recent years, but that changes next year as Bignell’s Erskine team claimed the title this season.

Each team was guaranteed three games before the playoffs.

This year’s playoffs saw Erskine’s Bignell team against Quinton Golby’s team from Brownfield in one semifinal, while Coronation teams skipped by Eno and Koryn Duncan met each other in the other semi.

Bignell was able to prevail 5-4 against Brownfield, despite being tied coming home and without last-rock advantage. All spectators were on the edge of their seats as Golby’s final rock just slipped to the back of the four-foot circle, while an Erskine rock was biting the button.

The Duncan and Eno semifinal was just as close.

Duncan sidelined Golby in the bronze-medal match.

The gold-medallists from Erskine had previously defeated Big Valley’s Skocdopole team 10-0, Gus Wetter’s Dunkle team 14-0 and Coronation’s Duncan foursome 4-1.
