Despite close finishes, Thunder teams eliminated from playoffs

Lacrosse is now finished for the year as the three Stettler Thunder teams to make it to the post season have been eliminated in the double-elimination format finals.

The Bantam Thunder gave their all, first facing Innisfail on Wednesday, June 15. The team suffered a hard 11-7 break, but according to Kim Smyth, league vice president, the third period of the game belonged to Stettler.

"We had something like a six point deficit and we got those goals," she said.

The team then went on to play in Red Deer on June 18, facing Red Deer 2, squeaking out a 9-8 win to stay alive in the post-season. However, that win put the team opposite to Lacoka — Ponoka and Lacombe — which on Monday, June 20 defeated the Thunder 11-5.

Novice was eliminated from the post-season in two straight losses, the first to Red Deer on Friday, June 17, and the second Blackfalds the following day. The tallies were 9-6 and 8-7 respectively.

"The team played very well together along with two additions from the Tyke team," coach Chris Raab said. "We represented Stettler proudly."

Peewee suffered the same fate as Novice, though it was a close final game. Friday pit the team against Didsbury, who beat them 12-2. However, the following day's match against Innisfail saw the team tied 2-2 for most of the game, with the Thunder's legs giving out toward the end. With the Thunder out of gas, the players from Innisfail managed to get past their defence to edge ahead 4-2.
