The Stettler Recreation Centre played host to the 2025 Curling Alberta men's playdowns from Feb. 5 to 9.
Hosted by the Erskine Curling Club, nearly 200 registered volunteers put in hundreds of hours in a short timeframe to bring the event to fruition. A host club normally has around two years to plan and execute the event, whereas the Erskine Curling Club had just 10 months to pull it off.
"We had a truly great time and it was an honour to bring an event of this calibre to our community and to be able to pull this off in the short time frame we had, leaves me speechless," said Miles Armstrong, organizing committee chairman.
"We are so proud to represent a small community doing big things! Thank you to all of you who came out to watch some fantastic curling, and congratulations to Team Kevin Koe on a great week of curling!"
A dozen of the best curling teams in Alberta descended on the community for practice on Feb. 4, with the event officially starting on Feb. 5.
Kevin Koe's team, made up of Koe, Aaron Sluchinski, Tyler Tardi and Karrick Martin, won all their games, winning the 'A' event and punching their ticket into the finals on Feb. 9.
Evan Van Amsterdam, with a team made up of Van Amsterdam, Jason Ginter, Sterling Middleton and Parker Konschuh, lost in the 'A' event but eventually captured the 'B' event, earning their way into the semi-finals and the finals against Koe.
Koe defeated Van Amsterdam in 10 ends with a score of 9-7 in a tightly contested game.
In the 'C' event, Daylan Vavrek, Tristan Steinke, Carter Lautner and Evan Asmussen came out on top after losing their 'A' and 'B' event games.
"The 2025 BP Cup was a resounding success," said Michael Laderoute, a representative with Curling Alberta who was on site for the entire tournament. "The event was not only a celebration of curling but also a testament to the dedication and hard work of the Erskine Curling Club, the community of Stettler, and the countless volunteers who made the championship possible."
With Koe's win at the Boston Pizza Cup, his team will now go on to represent Alberta at the Montana's Brier being held in Kelowna from Feb. 28 to March. 5.
