Campaign to create a minor lacrosse team in Stettler gathers pace with a new camp

A group of Stettler parents have been trying to create a lacrosse team in Stettler and they are appealing for interested young athletes to join the team.

Marma Merkley, one of the parents who have been campaigning for the creation of a lacrosse team said there were already several kids playing lacrosse in other communities.

“There are three kids that I know of that are going to Red Deer to play minor lacrosse and I think there is about five or six going to Drumheller,” said Merkley.

“We are going to be starting a camp on April 25 and it will be every Monday at the arena between 6 and 8 p.m. to teach kids how to play lacrosse.”

“We have already had a couple of practice sessions and these new camp sessions will be to find out if there is enough interest to create teams to join a league next year,” she said.

“It is basically a camp for kids to come and test their skills.”

For the past three weeks, some practice sessions have already taken place with some 40 kids showing up, according to Merkley.

A very physical and fast moving sport, lacrosse is slowly gaining popularity in central Alberta.

“There is central Alberta league and that’s what the kids going to Red Deer and Drumheller play at,” Merkley said.

“What we want to do is to create our own minor lacrosse association to be able to play in the central Alberta league.”

To create lacrosse team, at least 11 players need to be registered.
