Adult soccer team opens season with strong win

Minor soccer league got underway with full speed last week with almost all of the local teams playing their first regular season games and bringing in mixed results.

Boys U12 B team tied twice in the first week of play, first 0-0 with Lacombe and later 1-1 with Ponoka Apaches, with Bailey Webb scoring the point for the local team.

Boys U12 A team also had a 1-1 tie with Ponoka, but later defeated Clive with a handsome 7-1 score with goals coming from Ryan Mielke (2), Adam Johnston (2), Delaney Anderson (2) and Trey Strandquist. U12 A team’s both games of the first week were played on the road.

U14 boys beat Clive 6-0 repeating the success of the younger Stettler team with goals from Tanner Steinwand (2), Scott Verhoeven (2), Garret Burns and Jong Langford)

As for U16 boys, they beat Rocky Mountain House 2-0 with Anthony Vanderburg and Tyler Wells scoring one apiece.

But their moment of victory was against Ponoka, whom they thrashed with a humiliating score of 11-0.

Jamie Bromwich put three numbers on the scoreboard as did Braden Reynolds and Tyler Wells with Frank VanOmmeren and Anthony Vanderburg completing the tally with one goal each.

It was, however, a different story for U18 boys who lost to Lacombe 3-0.

U14 girls lost to Ponoka with the same score, but they did manage to tie their away game in Lacombe 2-2 with Kendra Volker and Rebecca Harvey putting the numbers on the scoreboard.

U18 girls lost to Ponoka 5-2 with Nicola Starling and Kelsey Bissett scoring for the local side. They lost 3-0 to Lacombe, as well.

Adult soccer schedule finalized

In the meantime, Stettler has adult soccer has now earned a distinction by winning their first regular league game of the season by a score of 8-4 against Camrose at home.

According to Cathy Dadensky, coordinator for Stettler’s adult soccer team, the schedule of the games have now been finalized with the next game set for 7:15 p.m. on May 27 in Clive followed by the second home game of the season on Sunday, May 29 against Ponoka. Kick-off time is 2:30 p.m.

All of the home games of the Stettler team will be played on the new fields at the sports park.

Stettler will later host Camrose on June 19 and travel to Clive once again on July 8.

The last two games of the regular season will be against Ponoka team # 2, the first at home on July 10 and the last one week later in Ponoka, both beginning at 2:30 p.m.
