HALSETH (nee Murat)

July 13, 1936 - May 2, 2016

Vivian Jane Murat was born in Stettler, Alberta on Monday, July 13th, 1936 to Aloyse and Viva Murat (Stenlund). She was followed by Betty, Lily Mae, Joyce, Linda and Arthur. She grew up on the family farm north of Donalda and attended Donalda School.

On July 2nd, 1954, Vivian married Robert (Sonny) Halseth and together they farmed east of Donalda and raised five children; Brenda, Becky, Bob, and twins Kevin and Kelly.

Life on the farm was busy. In addition to the work of raising children and keeping a household for seven, Vivian milked cows, raised and cared for cattle, horses, pigs, turkeys, pheasants, geese and chickens, grew an enormous garden, sold produce at the Farmer's Market and cream to Donalda Creamery, sewed clothes for the family, played games, joined in water fights and canned anything and everything that could be canned. She was well known for her homemade buns, bread and nothing tasted better than her freshly fried bread.

Vivian enjoyed horseback riding, sewing, curling, golfing, snowmobiling and playing cards. In the rare moments she got to relax, you would usually find her with a romance novel in her hand.

Vivian drove a school bus for 20 years, a job of which she was both very good at and exceedingly proud.

From 1983 to 1986 she and her daughter Becky owned and operated Mom's Restaurant in Stettler, which offered a menu featuring Mom's best recipes and catered special events.

Sonny passed away in 1989. Eight years later she met Frank West and in 1998 they took up residence together on Frank's farm southwest of Stettler.

In 2005, Vivian was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. In 2008 she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and underwent a bowel resection. In 2013 she learned that the breast cancer had metastasized to her bones.

Vivian is survived by Frank West (spouse), Brenda Klatt (Gordon), Becky Ann Clement (Lionel), Bob Halseth (Joanne), Kevin Halseth (Kim), Kelly (Steve Tyson). Grandchildren; Trevor Klatt (Myste), Tracey Klatt (Kim), Tarah (Klatt) Knodel, Todd Kampe (Anona), Jason Clement, Juston Clement, Kaylon Clement, Travis Halseth (Megan), Candace Halseth, Tyler Halseth, and Brittene Halseth and 12 great-grandchildren.

Vivian is also survived by her three sisters Betty Fjell, Joyce Klein (Walter), Linda Filimek and her brother Arthur Murat (Greta), her sister-in-law Kathleen Muncy and her Uncle Dennis Stenlund (Vicki) and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Funeral services were held at Heartland Chapel of Stettler Funeral Home on May 10, 2016 with Rev. Jack Schulze officiating. Daughter and son Kelly and Kevin Halseth gave loving tributes of their mom. Several of Vivian's favorite pieces of music were played for all to enjoy. Family and friends gathered for a time of sharing and a luncheon by Teresa's Catering.
