SCOTT

Thelma Jean (Dewar)

Thelma Jean Scott (Dewar) of Westlock passed away peacefully on March 26, 2016 at the age of 102. She was born on September 6, 1913 in Vermillion Alberta and grew up in Big Valley, Alberta. After high school she attended Normal school in Calgary and then went on to teach in a one-room schoolhouse near Rumsey, Alberta, where she met her future husband, Bruce Scott. She continued her teaching career in Lacombe, Taber and Big Valley until after World War II, when she married Bruce after he returned from serving overseas. They farmed in the Rumsey area and started a family. In 1956 Thelma, Bruce and their three boys, Nelson, Jim and Don moved north to Westlock. Shortly after the move Bruce passed away leaving Thelma to raise her three boys as a single mother. She returned to teaching at the Westlock High School. She spent the summers upgrading her education and taking her boys on camping vacations all over Alberta. She sacrificed a lot to raise her children and she was very proud of the men they became. She retired from teaching in 1975 only to get busier. She volunteered at the Westlock library, museum and most especially, at the Westlock United Church. Her life was full of love, laughter, students, friends and most importantly family. She will be terribly missed. Thelma was predeceased by her husband Bruce, her parents Frank and Elizabeth Dewar, her aunt Emily Hay, brother Lawson Dewar, and sister Margaret Hemphill. She is survived by her sons Nelson (June) of Edmonton, Jim (Michelle) of Grande Cache, and Don of Westlock, five grandchildren, Pam Luck of Edmonton, Graham Scott (Jennifer) of Red Deer, Robin (Kirsten) of Grand Prairie, Nicole (Dallas) Dakin of Grande Prairie, Leslie (Becca) Oliver-Scott of Grande Cache and five great grandchildren, Paige Luck, Carter Luck, Halayna Scott, Jack Scott, and Blair Scott.
