WAKEFIELD, Shirley Anne

1934 - 2010

Shirley Anne Wakefield passed away Saturday, June 5th, 2010 at Stettler, Alberta, at the age of 75 years. She is survived by her loving family; Bill (Cindy) Wakefield of Calgary, AB and Cindy (Greg Martin) Wakefield of Stettler, AB; one grandson, Jeff Martin of Stettler, AB and a host of relatives and friends from far and wide. Shirley was predeceased by her parents; mother, Marielouise Thull in April 1972, father, Andrew thull in October 1978, and her only brother, Richard Thull in December 2008. Shirley was born December 26, 1934 in Lethbridge, AB and grew up on the family homestead East of Milk River, where she attended school to grade ten which was the highest grade available there. Her parents wanted their children to get an education, so Shirley was sent to Red Deer to complete her high school education. After graduation, she obtained employment in Coronation as a weather forecaster, which developed in her, a life-long interest in all things weather-related. It was during her time in Coronation, where she met and eventually married her husband, Alvin Wakefield. After relocating to their little acreage just outside of Stettler, she was soon blessed with two children - Bill and Cindy. Alvin and Shirley eventually parted ways, with Shirley staying on the acreage to raise her family and make her living. During the 50 plus years that she lived in the Stettler area, Shirley took on many different careers. Everything from owning/operating a taxi service, raising/ breeding and showing prize Jersey cattle, running the front desk at a local motel or two, to working in a greenhouse for many years where she expanded on her knowledge and love of gardening. She paid meticulous attention to the care of her little acreage, and took great pride in it's expansive lawns and garden. She loved spending her time gardening and making sure all the little critters that roamed through her acreage had some food and water. Stamp collecting, watching sports on TV (especially a love of curling), travelling and going to various concerts were other hobbies that she enjoyed as well as spending quality time with her family and friends. She was particularly proud of her own children's achievements in life and especially proud of her only grandson, Jeff, an exceptional student who she hopes will go far some day. Shirley may be physically gone from our lives but she will never be gone from our hearts and our memories. Our Mother - Our Grandmother - Our Friend.
