ODELL

Ruth Odell, age 92, passed away peacefully March 13, 2012 at the Pine Ridge Continuing Care, Stettler. Ruth leaves to cherish her memory two children, son, John Odell of Edmonton and daughter, Valerie Odell (Brian Briltz) of Stettler; six grandchildren: Sheri, Jason, Crystal, Amber, Delaine and James & five great grand-children: Alex, Levi, Riley, Hailey and Nathan. Also, she is survived by two sisters- in-law, Esther Lynn of Fort Assiniboine, Joan Lynn of Medicine Hat; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Bob Odell (October 1980), her parents, (James and Susie), four sisters, (Sylvia, Della, Susie, Nora) and three brothers, (James, Bob and Pete). Ruth was born August 26th, 1919, in Calgary the third youngest of eight children. She was raised on the ranch south of Youngstown. She attended Crocus Plains School which her sisters, Nora and Sylvia taught. She tells of riding horseback with her siblings to the school and helping her brother Bob build the fire in the school house. Her lifelong dream to be a nurse was realized when she graduated in 1943 at Royal Alex in Edmonton.

She married Bob August 28, 1946. They lived in Hanna. Ruth left the nursing profession to raise John and Valerie and to help in the family store, Odell's Hardware. She returned to nursing in the mid 1970's and retired in 1984. In early 1990's she moved to Stettler to be closer to family.

She will be well remembered by all as a generous, warm and loving lady. A celebration of her life was at the Heartland Chapel of Stettler Funeral Home on Monday March 19, 2012 at 2 p.m. Service was led by Mr Bruce Lynn. Her son, John Odell gave a loving tribute to those in attendance. Betty Stokoe presented her gift of music for the congregational hymns. Memorial donations may be made to SHSF - Pine Ridge c/o Stettler Funeral Home. Friends gathered for a time of memories and a luncheon by the mom's of Rhonda Sylvester's Gracenote Choir.
