January 19, 1938 – November 11, 2020
Ruth passed away peacefully, age 82. Ruth was a Bluenoser, born in Halifax and raised in Stewiacke, Nova Scotia by her dad Lloyd and stepmother Doreen, along with siblings David, Mike, Eileen, and Muriel. However, she spent the majority of her life out west in Alberta and British Columbia.
Ruth met William Charles Nicholson in Ontario when both were serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. They married and settled in Stettler, Alberta where they raised four children. She met her second husband, Joseph St. Onge, in Vancouver, B.C., where he was the building superintendent in her apartment building, and they married in 1991.
Ruth trained as a nursing assistant and in 1982, at the age of 44, graduated from the University of Alberta’s nursing program. She worked at the University of Alberta Hospital, primarily in the heart transplant unit. In 1987, she followed some of her transplant patients and moved to Vancouver, B.C.
Ruth loved living and working in the vibrancy of Vancouver’s downtown. She worked for many years in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Paul’s Hospital. Ruth was a patient’s nurse, a passionate advocate for her patients, doing whatever was needed to make her patient’s stay comfortable.
After retirement, she transferred that passion and enthusiasm to hiking with her Dogwood Senior Centre friends, volunteering at Dogwood, and volunteering with the Burquitlam, the Port Moody, and the City of Vancouver Community Police.
Ruth was also able to indulge her love of travelling in retirement. She travelled to Mexico on several archaeological digs, as well as to Alaska, Turkey, Peru, and England. Her last major trip was sailing through the Panama Canal.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband Bill Nicholson and their children Carol and Bruce. Her husband Joe predeceased her in 2002.
She is lovingly survived by son Bill, daughter Deborah and son-in-law Ian; grandson Conor (Emily); sisters Muriel and Eileen; her good friend Wendy, sisters- in-law Faye and Bernice; brother-in-law Tom; and her extended family Sharon, Zane, Joel, Shaun, Alica, Justin, Genine, Ren, Gerard, Rueben; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ruth was a mother, a wife, a nurse, a traveller, and a hiker. She is remembered by all as a feisty, strong, and independent woman.
