Rex N. STRADER

April 21, 2010

STRADER

Rex N. Strader, 92, died April 21, 2010 at the Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, B.C. from complications of pneumonia.

He was born July 11, 1917 in Halkirk, Alberta to Lawson and Carrie Strader who were early pioneers in Alberta from Minnesota, USA.

At his request, no funeral service will be held. To celebrate his life, a memorial will take place on July 11, 2010 at his home in Harrop, B.C.

Rex was a hard-working, principaled man. His early years were spent as a rancher, cow-boy, coal miner, construction worker and painter. Rex and Irene were married in 1945 and moved from Halkirk to Calgary in 1958 where they raised their family for the next twenty years. At the age of 61, he and Irene relocated to Harrop, B.C. from Calgary, Alberta to live out their dream of owning a piece of property big enough to raise a huge garden and a horse or two or six. Thirty-six years of labour produced a comfortable home in a park-like setting. Their chosen retirement location has been ideal for family gatherings throughout the yeas. His children and grandchildren have greatly benefited from his choice to move to the West Kootenays as it proved to be an ideal vacation spot. Rex opened his heart and hometo all and his hospitality and generous nature were remarkable.

Rex is survived by Irene, his loving wife of 64 years; his children, Dale, Randy, Carol and Brent; daughters-in-law, Carol, Joy and Angela; grandchildren, Lisa, Stephen, Jarrod, Jeremy, Kyla, Katelyn and Victoria; great-granddaughter, Lacey and great-grandson, Evan. Rex's only surviving sibling is Dorothy Swan who resides in Calgary. He has also left behind many nieces and nephews who meant the world to him.

Rex revelled in living the rural life. He was rugged and hardy as any rancher, farmer or cowboy could be. Rex had great compassion for all animals and they sensed it too. He was loved by his family, friends, neighbors and pets and will be sorrowfully missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
