WHITLOW

Mary Ellen started working when she was ten years old cleaning houses while she was going to school. She was one of 12 children but only four are still living. July 6, 1937 she married Alan Whitlow. They moved to Calgary in 1944 before Alan was sent overseas. She worked at McGavin's Bakery during the war years. They moved to Okotoks in 1968 where they bought forty acres of land and boarded thoroughbreds and standardbreds for several years. She loved going to the races and watching the horses run; but the extra thrill was when she had a small bet on them. She loved all animals but she had one race horse that just couldn't function unless he was near her and he lived until he was 28 years old. She moved to Castor in 2002 to be with family. Survived by her children: Beverley Cawthorn, Marilyn (Donald) Gilkyson, Barbara (Cecil) Ray, Wendy Whitlow; Linda Whitlow, Cindy (Lorne) Spady, Craig (Laura) Whitlow; grandchildren: Shawn Ray, Kenny (Melisa) Gilkyson, Jolene (Chad) Weber, Todd Beveridge; great great granddaughters, Allie Weber and Ashley Gilkyson; brothers, Hilliard Oneil, Jim Oneil; sisters, Alice Aldred and Doris Buks; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service was held on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at Parkview Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jim Culham officiating. Keith McIntosh, nephew of Mary's gave a tribute to those in attendance. Luncheon and visiting was held at Parkview Funeral Chapel.
