AWE

Mrs. Mary Alleen

1932 - 2010

Mary Alleen Awe of Donalda, Alberta passed away on Friday, October 22, 2010 at the age of 78 years after a brief illness at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, Alberta. Alleen was born to Otto and Mabel Paulson on July 13, 1932 in the district of Spruce Coulee, east of Donalda. Alleen took all of her schooling at Spruce Coulee School and then completed it in Donalda. While still at home, Alleen learned how to be a caring and loving person. The Paulson home was a welcome place for many neighbours and friends and relatives. Alleen carried on this "welcoming" tradition in her own home in the many years to come. After school was completed, Alleen worked for a while in Donalda at the village post office. It was while working here that she met Herb and they were married on August 10, 1963 and moved to the farm where they still reside. Alleen was very fond of the "view" on the hill. After having lived in the coulees for so long, the hilltop view to the east was "awesome". Alleen was fond of gardening, baking, canning and cooking. She worked very hard along side Herb on the family farm--milking cows, feeding pigs, feeding calves, raising ducks, geese, chickens and turkeys as well as any number of cats and, of course, a dog or two along the way. The family was blessed in 1968 with the arrival of daughter, Maureen Helen Awe. If Alleen thought she was busy before, this little bundle kept both of them hopping. Alleen was active all her life in various community organizations--first of all as a 4-H member, fondly speaking of Young People's Week in Olds, helping out with the Donalda 4-H Dairy Club, and then driving to Bashaw when the Donald Club shut down. Alleen was a long time member of the Donalda Ag Society helping to organize and run the indoor rodeo for 23 years, a long time member of the Red Willow Cemetery Club - acting as the club treasurer for many years, a member of Lyncot Ladies Group, and along with Judy Swaren helped organize and run the Donalda Bench Fair for many, many years. Alleen was an avid curler for many years and up until a couple of years ago was still active in bowling until she was unable to participate due to diminishing eye sight. Alleen was especially fond of traveling. She was a collector of salt and pepper shakers, blue willow china, small oil lamps, spoons and was very fond of hunting for arrow heads. She was always busy. Alleen was predeceased by her parents Otto and Mabel Paulson and very tragically by daughter Maureen in February 2009. She is survived by her loving husband Herb, precious grandchildren Jesse and Amber Standage, sister-in-law Anna Shirreff, nephew Ernest Shirreff and family and niece Elaine Shirreff and family; brother-in-law George and Mary Anne Awe and nephew James Awe and family and nephew Clay Awe and family; sister-in-law Gladys and Henry Dahl and niece Teresa and Neil Stephens and family, nephew Duane and Kayleen Dahl and family, nephew Brad and Penny Dahl and family and nephew Brian Dahl; sister-in-law Dianne McEwing and niece Heather McEwing and family and nephew Kirk McEwing; Aunt Minnie Montgomery and her family, cousin Lloyd and Lois Paulson and their families; and by her very large extended family and many, many friends. A memorial services for the late Mary Alleen Awe will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at the Donalda Community Hall at 2:00 P.M with the Rev. Rick Laurendeau officiating. A time of fellowship was held in the Donalda Community Centre with the Spruce Coulee Ladies group serving the wonderful luncheon. Alleen was laid to rest at the Red Willow Cemetery immediately following the luncheon.
