Mary Ann

1922 - 2009

Mary Ann Groat passed away June 24th at the Stettler Pine Ridge Nursing Home at the age of 87 years. Mary is survived by her son Ken Lien (Judy), grandchildren Trena and Craig (Carolyn), great grandchildren Jaime, Morgan and Kenny. Her brothers and sisters Isabel Ritchie, Verna Nelson (Roy), Jack Groat (Gladys), Gordon Groat(Sharon), sisters-in-law Margaret Groat, Luella Drever and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Peter Groat and Elizabeth (Drever), sister Helen and brother-in-law Clifford Myers, brothers Bob Groat, Jim Drever, and brother-in-law Jack Ritchie. Mary was born in Castor, Alberta on June 8th, 1922, the first child of Peter and Elizabeth Groat, Mary grew up on the family farm just north of Endiang, and went to school at Ideal Valley and high school in Endiang and Big Valley. Mary taught school for 39 years, in several small communities in Alberta, B.C. and in Scotland. She spent the last 20 of these years teaching in the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Mary's passion was traveling, meeting people and sharing her kindness and wisdom in her quiet gentle way. A funeral service was held in the Brennen Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. with Susan Nelson officiating. Family and friends then gathered in the Brennen Funeral Home Reception Area for a time of fellowship and light refreshment. Interment will take place at a later date at the Endiang Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy and in loving memory of Mary, memorial contributions may be made to the Endiang Cemetery, the Canadian Cancer Soceity or the charity of your choice in care of Brennen Funeral Home and Cremation Services Box 193 Stettler, Alberta TOC 2LO, who were entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
