THOMPSON, Margaret

May 1, 1940 - June 2, 2010

Margaret Thompson was born May 1, 1940 to Jean and Scottie Roynon in Discovery, Transvaal, South Africa. Margaret’s mother passed away when she was 14 so her Grandmother Morley moved in look after Margaret and her father. Six months later Margaret’s Uncle Boetie, Auntie Kath, and Pam (then aged 12) sold their farm and moved in too. One big family was formed. Margaret and Pam grew up like sisters and the deep bond between them lasted to Margaret’s passing. Margaret started traveling at the age of 18 with a school class trip to Italy, Austria, Switzerland, London and Germany. On her return to South Africa she graduated from a secretarial course with distinction. Margaret worked for an Engineering company and governmental department before setting off on her journey of a lifetime with her good friend Barb Jennings in 1964. She visited many different countries in Europe, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Japan, and lastly wanting to see the maple leaves, her journey led her to Canada where she met Dale in 1971. Dale and Margaret were married April 15, 1972 in Rosalind, AB. From there they bought a farm and built a life together near Bashaw, AB and raised two children, Brad and Jen. Margaret adapted happily to farm life and with the help of sister-in-laws and friends learned how to cook a roast, can vegetables, hem a pair of pants and other skills useful on the farm and in the household. Margaret returned to work at the Augustana University Library and Alberta Hospital Ponoka when her children reached middle school. She was very active around the house and in life and stated "that having an afternoon nap was a tremendous waste of time". Margaret will be lovingly remembered for her endless enthusiasm, generous good nature, smile and laugher, story-telling, kindness, and her eagerness to lend a helping hand. We feel very fortunate to have shared in the life of a woman that had such a wonderful spirit and her spirit will live on with us forever. We love you and you will be truly missed. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Dale of Bashaw, son, Brad of Bashaw and daughter, Jen of Camrose; "sister" Pam Lloyd of South Africa, sister-in-law, Marion (Karl) Benson; brothers-in-law Don (Lorraine) Thompson, David (Pat) Thompson and Allan Bowie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Jean Roynon, sister-in-law, Wilma Bowie, "brother-in-law", Derek Lloyd. A Service of Remembrance to celebrate Margaret’s life was held at the Bashaw United Church on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Robin King officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or to the Bashaw Health Centre Palliative Care Unit.
