December 24, 1924 - November 14, 2019
Mom was brought into this world on December 24th, 1924, amidst a winter blizzard by her mother, Anna, on a farm near Huxley with the help of her father, Harry, a former WWI medic. She was the youngest of three children. After losing her mother at age five, she was raised by her father and two brothers which led her to learn the value of hard work, independence and family.
Margaret got her early education at the nearby Arthurville School and continued on to finish high school at Loyalty. At age seventeen, she moved to Ontario to work in a munitions plant to aid in the war effort.
Upon returning to Alberta after the war, she worked with AGT and then with The Hudson's Bay and The Royal Bank in Calgary.
It was at this point, she met the love of her life, Vern, at a dance and they married in 1948. Being married to a teacher meant moving around a lot. From Royalties, to Hanna where they began their family with daughters, (Marilyn and Diane), to Coronation, to Rowley (where they welcomed two boys, Lyle and Lloyd), to Calmar, to eventually making their home in Stettler. It was there that they soon completed their family with the addition of Brian.
Margaret was a devoted mother who also enjoyed gardening, music and singing, camping, travel, drawing and painting but most of all spending time with her family. When the children were older, she had a variety of jobs which included being a Fuller Brush saleswoman and working at the Stettler Hospital.
After Vern passed, she pursued her passion for genealogy, the preservation of prairie grain elevators, and for many years worked as a volunteer at the Stettler Library.
Margaret spent the last few years in Airdrie and Calgary to be closer with family, but now has returned home.
Mom is survived by her children Marilyn, Diane, Lyle (Michelle), Lloyd (Irith) and Brian (Denise); grandchildren Jamie, Gabe, Aloe, Ian, Emily, Scot, Lauren, Stuart and Kara; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sister-in-laws, Edythe Martin and Bessie Martin, and numerous Martin and Lloyd nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, her two brothers, her husband, her infant son, and one grandson.
