HEER

Manuel Dervil

1922 - 2011

Mr. Manuel Heer passed away at Pine Ridge Nursing Home on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at the age of 88 years. Manuel was born on his father's homestead near Gadsby on September 1, 1922, a son to John and Maria Heer. He began his education at Ranching School and then onto the Model School. Manuel's highlight of school was taking part in the Christmas concert and spending weeks memorizing stories and poems and rehearsing. Manuel spent a lot of his time snaring gophers and robbing crow's eggs and the County paid him for each one. Manuel worked on his parents' farm and then decided to try something different and bought a house in Stettler. He was married to Gladys Jordan on June 26, 1951 in the Stettler United Church. In 1953 Manuel began to work on the oil rigs. He then decided to go into the water well drilling business which he did for almost fifty years. Gladys became restless in town so Manuel bought an acreage and moved back to the country and sadly, shortly after, Gladys passed away in 1964. Gladys and Manuel had four children, Randy, Dervil, Sharon and Barbara. After Gladys passed away, Dervil moved to Erskine. He loved to garden and grew all sorts of vegetables and berries as well as apples and plums. Manuel held an auction and moved to Willow Creek Lodge and then on to Pine Ridge Nursing Home. He is survived by his children Dervil Heer of Cochrane, Sharon Hughes (John) who recently moved to Stettler to be with her dad, and Barbara Pyette of Barrie, Ontario; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Myrtle Hoopfer of Stettler; brother-in-law Fred Gueffroy of Stettler, nephew Percy (Paulette) Heer, niece Dale (Eldon) Van Straton, nephew Michael Gueffroy, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father John in 1943, his Mother Maria in 1948, his wife Gladys in 1964 and his son Randy in 1999. A memorial service will be held in the spring for Manuel and he will rest in peace in the Omega Cemetery, Gadsby, Alberta. Memorial contributions and expressions of sympathy may be made in care of Brennen Funeral Home and Cremation Services P.O.
