Lloyd Melvin

1928 - 2011

Mr. Lloyd Melvin Smith (Smitty) passed away peacefully in Red Deer on January 10, 2011 at the age of 82 years. He was born on December 17, 1928 at home in Bow Island, Alberta. Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, six brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his loving wife Helen of 57 years, sister Gladys, many nieces and nephews as well as brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Very good friends were abundant and were a very big part of Lloyd's life. At an early age, he worked at Medalta Pottery in Medicine Hat. From there Lloyd went to the Yukon and then to a warmer climate, the West Coast. Being a man who loved to sing, he entertained in the bars at night and helped build power lines up in the mountains as a day job. Alberta was calling him back where he settled in the Stettler area where he worked on the oil rigs. Here he met Helen and they were married in March of 1953. Community involvement was a must for Lloyd. He belonged to the Legion, Elks Club, Lions Club and worked tirelessly for the Heartland Youth Centre. His enthusiasm for life and his community and his kind way with people will always be remembered. Funeral services were held at the Stettler United Church on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. The interment took place earlier that day in the Lake View Cemetery in Stettler. As an expression of sympathy, and in loving memory of Lloyd, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in care of Brennen Funeral Home and Cremation Services P.O.
