CHINN - Julian Southall, of Stettler, AB, passed away peacefully on Aug. 25, 2008 at the age of 89 years. He was born March 5, 1919 in Stettler and was the only child of Ernest and Nellie Chinn. He attended Vimy Ridge School and completed Grade 10. Julian farmed with his dad and helped care for his invalid mother and grandparents. He resided on the family farm near Buffalo Lake until failing health forced a move to Stettler in 1992. Julian was very talented with his hands and won many prizes at school fairs he also once won a trip to Olds College. He was mechanically inclined and had the reputation of being able to fix anything. Later on in life, Julian very much enjoyed working in his shop and restoring old Massey Harris tractors. He loved dancing and was a very accomplished musician. He played the piano, banjo, mandolin, guitar and accordion but especially enjoyed playing the violin. Julian was married to Meryle Johnstone in 1946 and together they had two children. Julian and Meryle farmed and drove the school bus for many years. Julian was an active director on the Stettler Hospital, UFA and Co-op boards for many terms. After Meryle’s death, Julian married Lorraine Moore. They enjoyed dancing, camping and traveling. Julian loved his many trips to Mexico. Unfortunately, Julian’s health failed and Lorraine spent many years being a devoted caregiver. Julian is survived by his loving wife of 32 years - Lorraine Chinn of Stettler, daughter Nellie (Oris) Rider of Stettler, son Frank (Faye) Chinn of Calgary, AB, stepdaughter Linda Moore of Edmonton, AB, stepsons Bill (Peggy) Moore of Claresholm, AB, Glenn (Crystal) Moore of Calgary and Craig (Terry) Moore of Beaumont, AB. As well as 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Mabel Lagore, Vera West, Maxine Johnstone and Fay Johnstone, brothers-in-law Glen (Marion), Willard (Joanne) and Bob Johnstone and cousin Judy (David) Payne, numerous other relatives and a host of friends. A funeral service was held at the Stettler United Church on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008 at 2 p.m. with Mrs. Susan Nelson officiating. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage House (Auxiliary Hospital) or to the Stettler United Church in care of Brennen Funeral Home (2001) Ltd., Box 193, Stettler, AB TOC 2LO who are entrusted with the care and arrangements.
