SNELL

Oct. 26, 1923 - Sept. 26, 2010

John Ross Snell was born at home near Excel Alberta and passed away in Edmonton at the Cross Cancer Institute. He is survived by his wife Elsie Snell, daughter Lisa Bauer and her husband Greg of Benalto, Alberta. He is also survived by two sisters, - Grace McFadyen of Acadia Valley Alberta, Hazel Martyn of White Rock B.C. and two brothers - Stewart Snell of Stettler, Alberta and Charles Snell of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. Ross, as most people knew him, grew up and farmed in the Excel area until he met Elsie in 1959. They moved to the Botha area and during their farming there, Lisa arrived in their lives. They farmed at Botha until the 1970's when they decided to move into Stettler for semi-retirement. Ross worked in the construction business there until deciding to hang up his hammer and fully retire in 1981 at which time they moved to Rocky Mountain House. Later they decided to move to Eckville to be close to Lisa & Greg, and finally in 1996 they moved to Benalto, where they fell in love with the view and wanted to stay forever. Ross kept busy in his retirement helping many with carpentry or mechanical projects, cat sitting for Lisa & Greg and visiting with neighbors and family. Even after being diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer in 2006 he never slowed down, and never let it get him down, always lending his courage and strength to those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of Ross's life was on October 12, 2010. Memorial donations in Ross's memory may be made directly to the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation (Unit 32, Palliative Care, Red Deer Hospital), P.O. Bag 5030, Red deer, Alberta T4N 6N2.
