PETERSON – John Manley Peterson. Mr. Manley Peterson of Sangudo, AB, passed away at the age of 69 years on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009 with his family at his side. He was born on Feb. 27, 1939 in Hughenden, AB. The family lived on a farm at Czar, AB and at the age of seven his father passed away. At this time the family relocated to Winfield, AB. Manley moved to Stettler, AB where he lived with his sister Nancey and it was in Stettler where he completed his schooling. After school he worked at the Co-op and took accounting courses and it was during this time that he met the love of his life Bunny Hennel. They dated while Bunny attended nursing school and married in 1966. Together they lived in Coronation, AB and in the fall of 1967 they moved to Barrhead, AB where Manley continued working at the Co-op. They welcomed their first child Greg in October of 1968. In 1970, their second son Brad was born and in 1973 they completed their family with the birth of their daughter Wanda. Manley was proud to become the new owner of the Big M Community Store and relocated his family to Sangudo, AB. Manley became very involved in the Sangudo community. He became part of the Elks Club, was a member of the Lions Club and over the years volunteered at almost every community event and believed whole heartedly in supporting his community. Manley had his first open heart surgery and after that he always made the most out of life and lived every moment to the fullest. Manley enjoyed golfing, playing guitar, playing cards with family and friends especially 500, camping, listening to CFCW and of course Oilers games. He was fortunate to have traveled extensively with his family and friends and always kept the romance alive in his marriage by surprising Bunny with flowers, gifts and trips to Yellowknife, NT and Australia. He had a very dry sense of humor and the phrase “For crying out loud” was used for every occasion. In 2001 Manley was forced to retire due to failing health, however, he kept busy on his acreage and spending all the time he could with his family and friends. He was a quiet, gentle and dignified man who never complained. During his last hours when asked how he was feeling he would simply say “Oh I¹m good.” Manley will always be loved and remembered by his wife Bunny of 42 years, children Greg (Deborah) Peterson, Brad (Miri) Peterson, Wanda (Derek) Roberts and Joerg (Elizabeth) Evermann, grandchildren Liam and Emmy Peterson, Kasia and Jalen Mitchell and Joshua and Jesse Roberts. Manley is also survived by his sister Nancey McAllister and brother Richard (Carol) Peterson, sisters-in-law Sharon and Caroline, brothers-in-law Allan (Rita) and Ron (Jo); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many very dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents John and Margaret, father and mother-in-law Rudolph and Doris Hennel, brothers Glenn and Clarence, brother-in-law Lawrence, nephew Bryan and other family members. A memorial service was held at the Sangudo Community Hall on Monday, Feb. 9, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Ruth Lotholz officiating. Immediately following the service friends and family gathered in the hall for a time of fellowship and light refreshments.
