ISABEL FLORENCE STEWART

Isabel Florence Stewart passed away on June 24, 2011 at Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital, Castor, Alberta at the age of 96 years and 7 months. Isabel was born to Archibald and Harriet Thompson on November 24, 1914 at Redcliff, Alberta. Isabel moved with her older brother Harry and her parents to Stavely, Alberta in 1916. In the spring of 1918, they arrived in Gadsby where they purchased a farm close to the Big Knife School so that she and her brother Harry could walk or ride the horse to school. On December 21, 1936 Isabel married Jack Stewart and to this union five children were born: Sheila, Jean, Lorne, Alan and Sherry, they farmed and raised their children south of Gadsby. Isabel was a very devoted wife and mother and a very hard worker. She always had a very large garden, she milked cows and we always had chickens - the staples of all farms in the early years. There was always fresh baked bread, cakes, cookies, etc. Isabel enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Almost every grandchild and great grandchild had a sweater, bonnet and booties to come home from the hospital in and maybe even a shawl that was made by grandma. In 1970 they retired to the village of Gadsby where Isabel resided until September 1998 when she moved to the manor in Castor. She moved to the Paintearth Lodge in May 2007 where she resided until her passing. Isabel was an active member of the Gadsby Hobby Club until her relocation to Castor. She enjoyed playing Bingo and played right up until about three months before her passing. She always looked forward to the visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren and the great grandchildren looked forward to the special treats she always had for them. Isabel was predeceased by her parents in 1955, her husband Jack on January 14, 1982, her daughter Jean on August 25, 1999 and her son Lorne on March 30, 2000, her brother Harry in 1972 and two great grandsons. She leaves to mourn her loss her daughter Sheila (Al) and family, her son Alan (Lois) and family, daughter Sherry (Doan) and family, son in law Ken Anderson and family, daughter in law Diane Stewart and family, fifteen grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Knox United Church in Castor, Alberta on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 with Rev. Mervyn Penfound officiating. Knox United Church Choir led the singing of the congregational hymns as Cathy Schaffner played the organ. Interment was held at Omega Cemetery with her grandsons David Campbell, Keith Campbell, Michael Anderson, Jody Anderson, Shane Stewart and Shaun Stewart as pallbearers. Family and friends gathered for a time of fellowship in the upper hall of Knox United Church and a luncheon by the U.C.W.
