MARTIN

Irene Edna

Irene Edna Martin (nee Milford), passed away peacefully at Points West Living in Stettler, Alberta on March 27, 2016, (Easter Sunday) at 90 years of age. Edna is survived by her daughters Judy Leflar (Doug) of Stettler, AB, Connie Martin-Doege (John) of Regina, SK; son Dave Martin (Sylvia Harvey) of Calgary, AB; grandchildren: Trevor Leflar, Stacy Frizzell (Jeremy), Jillian Martin (Lucas Maher), Rebecca West (Jay) and Andrew Rowland; great grandchildren: Owen and Brendan Frizzell, Isla and Astoria Maher, Reagen and Aaron Opperman; other relatives and friends. Irene is survived by sisters Norma Hardy, Melitta Lanktree and Joyce Doty; brothers Don Milford and Doug Milford. She was predeceased by her husband Harry, parents Wesley and Cassie Milford; sisters Hazel Davidson and Reta Morin; brothers William, Wesley and Ken Milford; and special friend Frank Storek.

Irene was born Feb. 3, 1926 in Carlyle, Sask. to Wesley and Cassie Milford, 4th in a family of eleven children. She attended Carlyle School and received her Teaching Certificate from Regina Normal School. During her career, Irene taught at Forget, Wauchope, Glasnevin and Bengough schools. While teaching at the Glasnevin Country School she met local farmer, Harry Martin. They married in 1948 and celebrated 51 years of marriage before Harry's passing in 2000. Irene taught for a total of 25 years, retiring in 1986.

During her retirement, Irene and Harry travelled throughout Canada, to Australia and New Zealand, Alaska and Hawaii and enjoyed many winters as Arizona Snowbirds. After Harry's passing, Irene continued to live in her own house and spend winters in Arizona until 2006 when she moved to Stettler, Alberta to be closer to her family. Irene was an active member of her community belonging to the Glasnevin Homemakers, the Friendly Circle, The Ladies of the Royal Purple, the Legion Auxiliary and the Bengough Quilters. Although she appreciated living closer to family during her declining health, she missed being involved with the many friends she had made through the years both in Saskatchewan and Arizona.

Special thanks to Dr. Lockhat and the caring, compassionate staff of Cottage A at Points West Living, Stettler, Alberta.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Stettler Funeral Home.
